On the outer islands of Fiji, regular healthcare is not available. Government sponsored physicians with limited supplies travel to a small number of outer islands on an unpredictable schedule.
For generations Village mothers have had their babies at home, often lying on mats laid on dirt floors. Here is a fortunate mother waiting to give birth in the meager hospital on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island.

Obtaining resources and training for lay nurses in order to provide local 24hour healthcare and modern facilities for the Villages is a prime initiative currently underway at Fiji Health.
Caregivers have very little training but very big hearts!
